Chapter 5 - The Carbon Cycle

The carbon dioxide cycle is defined by the exchanges that occur between the air and the oceans. Carbon dioxide is absorbed directly into the sea form the air, by plant and animal respiration, and by the oxidation of organic matter. Conversely, carbon dioxide is released from the ocean following the decomposition of countless millions of small organisms known as plankton. Carbon dioxide exchange takes place on the landmasses through the taking in of carbon dioxide by plant life during photosynthesis, and released back into the atmosphere during death and decay of the vegetation. Carbon dioxide is also released through the burning of fossil fuels, which as we have seen has impact on global climate change.
