The orogenic belts are a series of linear mountain chains which are zones of high relief. During its 4.6 billion year lifetime the earth has gone through many periods of mountain building. These episodes are marked by the linear mountain chains such as the: Appalachians, Rockies, Andes, Alps, and Himalayas. These oregenic activities were violent and grand in scale, consisting of the reformation of rock through thrusting, bending, and crushing into folds like a giant accordion. Ever since these orogenic events that brought about these awe inspiring landscapes nature has been eroding and shaping them, due to isostasy these mountain ranges endure.
