Chapter 23 - Metamorphic Rocks

Metamorphic rocks form as a result of great heat and pressure that alters the appearance and composition of previous rocks such as igneous or sedimentary. All rock types can be subjected to metamorphism; igneous rocks can be remelted and recrystallized, sedimentary rock can be fused through heat into a much harder rock, and even metamorphic rocks can be transformed again. Sandstone made of quartz grains when subjected to great heat and pressure becomes granite quartzite, a much more hard and resistant rock. When limestone is subjected to the metamorphic process it becomes marble which is a dense and hard rock able to withstand the elements for thousands of years.
