A system is any set of related events and their interactions. Systems can be divided in to two categories: open system, and closed system. A closed system is self contained and does not allow for the exchanged of energy or matter across its boundaries. One example of a closed system would be the carbon system. Alternatively, an open system does allow for the transfer freely of energy and matter two and from the systems boundaries. An example of an open system could be a city (such as Yellowknife as illustrated by the picture), which allows for the intake of energy, food, water, and goods, and the export of energy, water, and goods. While Yellowknife’s northern geographic location may make it more of a closed system when compared to Edmonton, it is nonetheless an open system.
