Chapter 21 - Asteroids, Comets, Meterites

Asteroids are small rocky bodies that have been in the solar system since its beginning and have not been swept up and incorporated into planets. They range in size from few km to a few tens of km, with the largest known asteroid having a diameter of about 950 km. Comets are generally tens of kilometres in diameter, and are composed of rock and a considerable amount of volatile ices. As the comet moves closer to the sun the volatile ice melts and forms their characteristic tails. Meteorites are solid bodies that have fallen to the Earth’s surface (or the surface of any celestial body). Meteorites are what we know as falling stars. Bollides is a term used by geologists in order to describe very large impactors of unknown types such as an asteroid, comet, or a large meteorite.
